Examples of Multimedia
There are many examples of multimedia on the World Wide Web. A search for examples of multimedia in education in a search engine such as Google will net numerous examples. Some sites are free whilst others charge a fee (usually low-cost) to register. Following are some examples, mainly in the disciplines of mathematics and science.
The educational site ABC Splash offers games, videos and other resources for students from early primary to year 10 in maths, science, English and history. There are articles and information specifically aimed for parents and articles, education news and resources for teachers. Many of the activities are based on real-life situations and are inter-disciplinary in nature. And all of this is available free! Another free site is SoftSchools offers quizzes, worksheets and games on a number of subject areas, including mathematics and science. It contains an extensive list of maths and science topics, aimed at kindergarten to 8th grade. The activities there are highly motivational. Unfortunately, the ads on the site can be a bit distracting. Maths drill practice and challenges are offered at Mathletics. contains over 1000 activities for students aged 5 to 18. A profile for is created for students so that each student’s progress can be monitored. The site is available at a low cost.
Jumpstart offers a virtual world for kids to play and build skills in maths, science, reading, geography, general knowledge and more for a low membership fee. The site is aimed at children aged 4 to 12 years and contains many free worksheets that are graded by year levels. The worksheets are completed online and detailed explanations are given when an incorrect answer is submitted. Videos and downloadable apps for iPad, Nintendo and Wii, which are either free are low-cost, are available at the site. All of this is accessible free upon registering at the site. Jumpstart incorporates the Mathblaster games, where many maths games can be found. Khan Academy aims to provide free world-class education. It provides interactive challenges, assessments and videos. Maths skills can be practiced there in an interactive way that allows students to obtain hints when they have difficulty. Subjects include mathematics, biology, chemistry and physics. You need to register to use Khan Academy, which enables the program to monitor a student’s progress. It can even monitor your class’s profile. |
