Introduction
Technology has afforded a valuable tool for education. Many programs have been available for some time, yet we often cling to the “old” ways. After all, they have worked in the past and it is easier and safer to stick to what works. But the world changes over time and if we as teachers don’t embrace this change, we become irrelevant and get left behind. For example, I recall that early in my high school teaching career there was a maths teacher who insisted on teaching his students how to do calculations using logarithm tables, even though every student at the school had to buy a scientific calculator. Examples of similar practices are seen today, where we ask students to spend hours mastering algorithms that can be performed more quickly and accurately by a computer algebra system which are even available on a hand-held device.
